The Pomapoo is the result of the union between a Pomeranian and a Poodle. Being a hybrid breed, a Pomapoo's exact traits cannot be fully predicted. As such, it has yet to be recognized by major organizations such as the American Kennel Club as an official species due to their trait inconsistency.
The first half of the Pomapoo's ancestral lineage, the Pomeranians, is descendants of large northern sleigh dogs. Those dogs were generally used for a variety of tasks such as herding animals and pulling sleighs. Those dogs were brought into a country called Pomerania, which this breed got its name from because of their reduction in size while in Pomerania. The Pomeranians as a breed eventually gained widespread popularity when Queen Victoria placed her own Pomeranians in the Cruft's Dog Show in 1891.
The other half of the Pomapoo's ancestral lineage, the Poodles, was originally bred as a water dog - made to retrieve shot or trapped game. Poodles are among some of the more popular species to be selected for inter-species breeding because of their intelligence, which may be passed on to its offsprings.
The results of this union is an offspring that generally bears many traits, physical or behavioral from its parents. Pomapoos are blessed with high intelligence, a gift from its parents, both known to be highly intelligent species themselves. Pomapoos also inherited some of its aggressiveness, loyalty and socializing nature from its Pomeranian parent, and its docility from its Poodle parent.
Because of the positive blend of the various natures into the Pomapoo, Pomapoos remains a very popular hybrid breed despite its lack of recognition, historical facts (stemming from Pomapoos being a relatively new breed themselves), and its fairly unpredictable traits (although the mixture is generally positive).
